Common questions
Do I need a referral to see a physical therapist?
Often not. According to the American Physical Therapy Association, all 50 states and DC allow some form of direct access, but some states limit how long or what kind of treatment you can get without a referral, and many insurance plans still require one. Our direct-access guide explains the details.
Does Medicare cover physical therapy?
Medicare Part B covers medically necessary outpatient physical therapy. A doctor or other qualified practitioner must certify the plan of care, and you generally pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount after the Part B deductible. There is no annual cap, per Medicare.gov; our Medicare guide covers the rest.
What does "accepts Medicare assignment" mean?
Per CMS's Doctors & Clinicians file, the group accepts the Medicare-approved amount as payment in full for covered services. You still pay your deductible and coinsurance. Confirm with the clinic, and if you have a Medicare Advantage plan, check that the clinic is in its network.
Who will treat me at a physical therapy clinic?
Physical therapists (PT or DPT) evaluate you and set the plan of care. Physical therapist assistants (PTA) may provide some treatment under a therapist's supervision. Ask who will see you at each visit and confirm licenses with your state board.
Why are individual physical therapists not listed?
There are more than 260,000 of them in the registry, so we list clinics and practices (organization NPIs), which is where you book. Ask the clinic which therapist will treat you and check that therapist's license.
Do you take fees for referrals?
No. Clinics can buy a flat-fee featured listing, labelled as such. We never charge per referral, patient or visit.
